Karwar Woman's 650g kidney tumour removed via Robotic surgery at A.J Hospital
In a landmark surgical achievement, A J Hospital & Research Centre successfully removed a massive 950-gram tumour from a 48-year-old Karwar woman's kidney using robotic surgery, showcasing the potential of cutting-edge medical technology in delivering complex care with minimal trauma.
Diagnosis of a rare fibrous tumour
The patient, a manual labourer and the primary earner in her family, had been suffering from persistent pain on the left side of her abdomen for over two months. Medical investigations in Karwar revealed a large renal mass, prompting her referral to A J Hospital in Mangaluru for specialised care.
Advanced diagnostic evaluations, including PET-CT and biopsy, confirmed the presence of a fibrous tumour measuring 8.2 x 5.4 x 16 cm, fully encasing the left kidney. After detailed counselling, the patient consented to undergo a Robotic Radical Nephrectomy using the state-of-the-art 4th generation Da Vinci Robotic System.
Precision surgery with swift recovery
Despite the tumour's challenging size and location, the Robotic Surgery Team at A J Hospital managed to remove it in its entirety through a minimally invasive approach. The tumour, weighing approximately 950 grams, was extracted via a small incision, reducing postoperative trauma and enabling faster recovery.
The patient tolerated the procedure remarkably well, with negligible blood loss, minimal pain, and was discharged just three days after surgery. The procedure has been hailed as one of the largest robotic kidney tumour removals at the institution to date.
Expert surgical team and patient-focused care
The complex surgery was led by UroSurgeons Dr. Prashanth Marla K, Q Dr. Pritham Sharma, and Dr. Roshan V. Shetty, supported by Anaesthetist Dr. Harish Karanth and Robotic Scrub Nurse Ms. Roshni. Their coordinated effort ensured precision, safety, and a positive outcome for the patient.
Crucially, the entire treatment-including surgery-was covered under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, ensuring no financial burden on the patient and allowing access to high-end treatment without compromise.
A regional benchmark in robotic excellence
Dr. Prashanth Marla K, Medical Director of A J Hospital & Research Centre, commented on the success:
"This case reflects our commitment to delivering world-class medical care through advanced technology. We are proud to make such high-precision surgeries accessible in Coastal Karnataka and will continue to push the boundaries of life-saving interventions."
This successful case not only illustrates the expertise of A J Hospital's robotic surgery programme but also reaffirms its position as a regional leader in complex surgical care, combining clinical excellence, innovation, and compassionate service.
